How Sew and Serve got its start
how we got started
Erika Pike came across the idea of sewing CDC-compliant masks from an article describing the request from Deaconess Health Systems in Evansville, IN. The news article asked that the public sew face masks for their staff. Turning to her local friends, she wanted to know whether there was an actual need for hand-sewn face masks. The response was clear that there was a critical need. This pushed her into action immediately. She created a Facebook group using the original pattern from Deaconess.
Erika reached out to her circle of friends and associates on Facebook by creating a group serving Hendricks and Marion County. Not only did the group grow quickly, the requests for more masks grew. Several women volunteered to assist as administrators and moderators for the group which helped coordinate the communication and facilitate the delivery of donations. That same day, requests began for additional types of surgical masks and surgical caps. The group is currently sewing face masks, face masks with a filter pocket, N95 covers, and surgery caps.
Soon after, a form was created to allow facilities to request masks and scrub caps. As mentioned, originally the need was focused on those facilities in Hendricks and Marion County. After several days, the growth was undeniable and the group changed the focus to Central Indiana. The group is evolving daily as the requests are increasing. Members have joined the group that don’t sew but are able to contribute by either purchasing supplies, donating money, or cutting fabric. Additionally, members have been donating fabric, elastic, and other supplies to one another.
As of Saturday, March 28, 2020, we have over 20,000 requests. We are serving all 9 central Indiana counties as well as Putnam and Monroe counties.
